You Got a Raise. So Why Doesn’t It Feel Like It?

If a little more money has just landed in your life, congratulations!

A new job, a promotion, a mid-year raise…those moments deserve to be celebrated. You’ve worked hard for them.

But they also offer something else.

An opportunity.

An opportunity to build financial momentum instead of simply increasing your spending.

Because here’s the quiet trap nobody warns you about.

A few months later, your raise has somehow…disappeared.

Life costs a little more.

Your bank account doesn’t feel much different.

And somehow, you don’t feel any further ahead.

That’s called lifestyle creep, and it’s incredibly common.

What lifestyle creep actually is

Lifestyle creep is the natural tendency for spending to rise alongside your income.

A few more dinners out.

The upgraded phone.

The streaming subscription you didn’t really need. (and hardly watch)

A nicer vehicle. (because you can afford the payment)

A few more online purchases because, “I can afford it now.”

None of these choices are necessarily bad.

They’re usually small enough that they don’t feel significant on their own.

But together, they quietly absorb the very raise that was supposed to create more freedom.

From the outside, life looks upgraded. But instead you’re left feeling “Bougie Broke”

Because behind the scenes, you’re still wondering where all your hard earned money went.

There’s something else people often forget

A raise doesn’t just increase your income.

It can also increase the amount of tax you pay.

That’s why a raise is one of the best times to review your financial plan.

Depending on your situation, contributing to an RRSP may help reduce your taxable income while simultaneously investing in your future.

It’s one of those opportunities that’s easy to miss if no one points it out.

A raise is a decision, not just a deposit

One of my favourite mindset shifts is this:

A raise isn’t simply extra money.

It’s a fork in the road.

You get to decide, on purpose, what this new income is going to do for your life.

If you don’t make that decision, lifestyle creep will often make it for you.

How to make your raise work for you

1. Pause before upgrading your lifestyle.

Give yourself a little time before increasing your spending.

Even a month or two of living as you did before can show you what actually adds value to your life and what was simply excitement about earning more.

2. Put your future first.

Before the extra income disappears into everyday spending, decide where you want some of it to go.

Increase your automated investment contributions.

Build a sinking fund for the upcoming irregular expenses you know are coming

Pay down debt.

Automating these decisions so your future benefits before your spending adjusts.

3. Choose your upgrades intentionally.

This isn’t about saying no to everything.

If better coffee every morning genuinely makes you happy, enjoy it.

If travel fills your cup, make room for it.

Choose the upgrades that truly improve your life instead of letting every expense quietly grow with your income.

4. Split your raise on purpose.

One approach I love is dividing every raise into two parts.

One part supports your future.

The other is yours to enjoy today.

That way you get to celebrate your success while also creating lasting financial progress.

Let your raise create freedom

The goal isn’t to lock every extra dollar away.

It’s to make sure your raise actually changes your life in the way you hoped it would.

More peace.

More security.

More choices.

More freedom.

That’s what financial alignment looks like.

A new job or raise is one of the best moments to create new financial habits because you’re already adjusting to change.
